How to Find and Use Free Online Teacher Resources

January 27, 2012 by Jane

Being a teacher is fulfilling but also very challenging. All schools provides a ready made curriculum along with textbooks that a teacher can and should use for the class; however, the teacher must help the students to grasp the material that is being presented and this is often not easy. Many teachers have found that they need more resources and materials than the school has provided. These additional materials can be used as homework or to help a student who needs extra practice in a particular subject.

The good news is that it is not hard to find K-7 teacher resources online. Most websites providing free online teacher resources do so free of charge, although some sites charge an annual membership fee. Many sites that specialize in providing educational resources not only offer worksheets but also curriculum ideas, games and other resources that can make the subject matter in question more interesting.

Teachers who are not familiar with the internet may find the sheer quantity of teacher websites overwhelming. In order to avoid being inundated with numerous educational websites, a teacher should do a very specific search online. Even so, one should be prepared to look through various sites before finding the exact materials that he or she needs. Once a teacher has found one or a few particularly good sites, these should be bookmarked online so that they can be used again as needed.

Any worksheets chosen should present the material in a clear and easy to understand way. A wise teacher will also make sure the quantity of questions and/or problems on the page is just right. Depending on the age and nature of the worksheet, it may be wise to use worksheets that do not have numerous problems, as this can overwhelm the student.

A teacher should also realize that worksheets can and should be enjoyable sometimes. Instead of printing worksheets that reinforce learning by rote, try to print worksheets that require some creativity on the part of the student. Worksheets of this nature can be used no matter what subject matter is being studied, as there are a wide range of math, grammar, history, social studies and science worksheets available over the internet.

There is also a danger in relying too heavily on worksheets. The material must be taught thoroughly and reviewed often in the classroom or the students will not retain what they have learned. A student who does not grasp the material may need an additional explanation after class or over recess. Worksheets should be used for review purposes only, as worksheets alone will not teach a new subject.

Worksheets and other teacher resources that can be found online can often help students to review a subject and/or gain a deeper understanding of something they are learning in class. These resources should be used in conjunction with the school’s curriculum and one should vary the type of worksheets that are given to make the material interesting and challenging for the students. When properly used, worksheets and other K-7 teacher resources benefit both teachers and students greatly.

To enchance aims and objectives for planning, one should go through variety of teacher resources. Before selecting teacher resouce, you should have a look at their thematic units.
